Siri AI, explainedExplainer

What is Google Gemini?

Quick answer

Gemini is Google's family of large AI models — the technology behind Google's own assistant and, as of 2026, the cloud intelligence inside Apple's Siri AI. Apple licenses a custom version of Gemini and runs it on Apple's own servers, so Gemini does the heavy reasoning without your raw data going to Google.

Google's model family

Gemini is Google's flagship line of multimodal AI models — able to work with text, images, and more. It powers Google's own products, and through licensing it already underpins much of Samsung's "Galaxy AI." In 2026 it became the engine behind some of Apple's AI features too.

Why it's in an Apple product

Apple's in-house models weren't ready to power a frontier assistant on the timeline customers expected, so Apple licensed Gemini for Siri's cloud intelligence. The full story is in Apple's Gemini deal, explained.

How Apple uses it without handing Google your data

This is the part most coverage gets fuzzy on. The custom Gemini model runs inside Apple's infrastructure — through Private Cloud Compute — not on Google's servers. Apple says raw user queries aren't sent to Google and data isn't stored after processing. Simpler, on-device tasks still run on Apple's own foundation models, not Gemini.

The nuance

"Powered by Gemini" doesn't mean you're using Google's Gemini app inside your iPhone. It means the engine behind some of Siri AI's cloud answers is a custom, Apple-tuned version of Gemini, operated by Apple.
